Is the Da Vinci Code the worst book ever written?
I would read a calculus textbook instead of this. I would read War and Peace instead of this. I would read a book where the ink wasn’t really ink but was lasers that burned my face, but sweet Jesus I can not understand the appeal of The Da Vinci Code.
Possibly. Dan Brown has a wonderful imagination, but no idea how to put it on paper.
People’s voices speak. Not people themselves mind you, but people’s voices.
His verb choices are dull and uninspiring. Characters almost always “look” or “see”. They never spy, observe, note, scrutinize, study, glower, or anything else. They “pick” things up, rather than snatch, clasp, or heave.
He’s rife with needless information, while he at the same time opts to consistently tell us things, rather than show us. “Renowned curator Jacques Saunière…”
Really? Renowned, is he? Thanks for informing us of that bit of needless information, when you might have bothered instead to show us how renowned he was.
More often than not, the flow of his prose makes little sense.
He’s a glutton for passive writing. Things happen to people, rather than people doing things. How long must I continue to insist, the eyes of people do not open?! Rather, people open their eyes.
The subject matter is the only reason he sold as many books as he did. I refuse to believe that many people considered his writing style of any worth whatsoever. I base this on the lagging sales he’s now experiencing. A great many people are saying, No thanks Mr. Brown, once is enough.
That being said, I’m not sure he hasn’t been outdone by one Stephenie Meyer. My god, here’s an author whose own publisher couldn’t believe in her anymore. I don’t know. I think it might be a tie between The DaVinci Code and Breaking Dawn.
