English Narrator of audio cassette “Alice in Wonderland/Alice Through the Looking Glass, around 1990…?
I received this 4-cassette set as a Christmas present somewhere between 1988-1994 (very loose, it was sooo long ago…). I remember it had a white cover, and was ‘unabridged’. The English narrator had a somewhat deep, rich voice; with a slight ‘Northern’ accent (i think). He also did comedic accents on the tapes for the different characters. I’ve had a look around at the tapes available today, and cannot seem to recognise any of the names, or make the time-frame fit. If you have any inkling, please advise, as i’d LOVE to find these tapes!!
There are/were lots of different audio book versions, but if it’s the same tapes that I had as a child here in England in the 80s, the narrator was William Rushton, also known as Willie Rushton. He died in the mid-90s, but his voice seems to meet the description you gave and my tapes were also a set of four with a white cover and blue lettering (although I think they were also available as two sets of two, if you see what I mean – two for each book).
I don’t think they’re available to buy any more, though. I haven’t seen them for years. Which is a pity because he read them SO well and yes, he did do brilliant voices for all the characters.
