Review of Tess Gerritsen’s The Apprentice
The Apprentice, first published in 2002 by Ballantine Books, is the second forensic thriller by Tess Gerritsen to feature the character of Detective Jane Rizzoli. In this book, however, readers get their first glimpse of cool-as-ice medical examiner Dr. Maura Isles. They are not given much insight into her thought process, though, and Rizzoli, like the other members of her homicide squad think of her by the name they’ve given her–The Queen of the Dead.
Set-Up of The Apprentice
As the novel begins, Rizzoli is interrupted while investigating the death of a Man Who has fallen out of an airplane by a phone call asking her to come to another crime scene. The location is in a wealthy suburb of Boston, out of Rizzoli’s jurisdiction, and at first she is puzzled as to why she has been summoned. In the house, a man has been found bound, naked, and dead in the living room. His throat has been cut. The victim is known to have been married, but the wife is nowhere at the scene. As Rizzoli enters the bedroom, however, she realizes why she is there. The wife’s nightgown, spattered with blood, has been neatly folded and left on the top of the dresser. This is the signature of the Surgeon, the serial killer she has helped put behind bars.
The Surgeon, however, had only killed women, and the Surgeon – whose real name is Warren Hoyt – is still in jail. A few days later, the body of the victim’s wife is found out in the woods. When Dr. Isles checks the woman’s body for signs of sexual assault, the semen she finds contains live sperm–revealing that this killer has continued to have sex with a dead body.
The FBI in The Apprentice
The person who asked Dr. Isles to check the sperm’s motility is Agent Gabriel Dean of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Rizzoli met him at the initial crime scene at the victims’ house, and cannot figure out why an FBI agent has been called in to help with the case. She is annoyed with Dean’s invasion of her territory. She is even more annoyed that she finds him attractive. How does he know to check the sample for living sperm? What does he know about the crimes that he’s not sharing with her homicide squad?
The Return of the Surgeon in The Apprentice
Rizzoli’s case–and life–become even more complicated when Warren Hoyt escapes from prison. More victims are found, and it becomes clear from the evidence that the Surgeon has resumed his sadistic work, alongside his new partner. It also becomes clear, from taped interviews with a psychologist while still in prison, that he harbors plans to get back at Rizzoli for escaping him the first time, and for costing him his revenge against the woman who killed his first partner.
Will Rizzoli escape Hoyt’s revenge? Will she save herself, or will Agent Dean need to rescue her? Will the reader ever learn the identity of Hoyt’s new partner, or why the FBI is interested in him? The reader is in for a thrilling experience finding out the answers, and it is no wonder that The Apprentice will serve as the basis for the first episode of the TNT television series Rizzoli and Isles.
