Is the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind good?
I’ve seen the Legend of the Seeker on tv and really liked it. When I found out the shows were based on books, I thought I should read them. But are they worth reading? Also, what age are they for?
i read the book series before i started watching the show. in fact, there probably aren’t too many people that watch the show who have read the books. most people find the show to be a terrible adaptation to the novels. i still find the show enjoyable though. they just changed so much about the story and altered many of the characters from the novels.
the sword of truth series, in my opinion, is the best book series i’ve ever had the privilege of reading. it has a huge fan base. the books are much more intense, and the characters are developed so much better. even if you’ve watched the show, you’ll be amazed at how different the story is. most of the places in the tv show are never mentioned in the books. they’ve been completely fabricated.
anyway, if you’re interested in reading the series, you can pick up the first book of the series, wizard’s first rule. the order of the book series is as follows:
debt of bones (a short 200 page prequel novel goodkind wrote before the final 3 books, you can read this at any time. it takes place about 20 years before the events of wizard’s first rule, and shows how the magical barriers came to exist to separate the three lands in the new world)
wizard’s first rule
stone of tears
blood of the fold
temple of the winds
soul of the fire
faith of the fallen
the pillars of creation
naked empire
the final three books in the series are a trilogy that completes the main story arch:
chainfire
phantom
confessor
goodkind’s most recent book, the law of nines, takes place in our modern. although it’s set in our world, the book is linked to the sword of truth universe. it follows a character named alex rahl, who is actually a descendant of richard’s sister, jenson rahl. the other major character is jax amnell. she travels from her world into our world to help alex. our world is actually a parrallel universe that richard created without magic at the end of the original sword of truth series. so in a sense, the story goes on. goodkind still has another 2 books coming out according to his contract. so there will be at least 2 more written that will deal with alex rahl.
lastly, you asked what age group the books are geared towards. there is a good deal of violence and there are some sexual situations that take place. i wouldn’t recommend this books series for children. i would however say it’s okay for older teenagers and up. the tv show is really down played.
good luck, prepare to get addicted, and enjoy the story. if you’d like more information on the series, i’ll post a link to the wikipedia article. the plot summaries are accurate, but short. don’t read those if you don’t want to spoil anything, but it gives you an idea of what the series is about.
