what are some elements of detective fiction found in Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby?
Also, how does Fitzgerald use these elements in the book?
When Gatsby’s neighbor takes on the role of investigator by emulating Sherlock Holmes, it becomes obvious that the story is a detective story. Although this “American” novel takes place in the last half on the streets of London is bizarre, it completely fulfills both Daisy’s and Nick’s desire to live a more adventurous life despite how much money both of them make. Once the story shifts to London, the detective elements become more apparent when Nick becomes a private detective and Daisy joins him as his clerk and also as an investigator on some of his more high-profile missions. This causes major strife for her family back in the States who discover she’s doing work that is below her class and want her to find a husband and marry him. So, this is really where the detective fiction comes in but you can see how this is tied into the story between Daisy and Jay Gatsby. Good luck!
