Familiar with the books Jane Eyre and Rebecca?
After reading both Brontë’s Jane Eyre and du Maurier’s Rebecca, note any similarities between Thornfield Manor and Manderley. Be sure to relate to both the physical structures, as well as the mood they convey. What makes each of these a Gothic novel?
I would say that both are Gothic novels because both stories feature innocent young heroines staying in places where they are surrounded by mystery. Both houses belong to men with sinsiter secrets in their past. mr Rochester keeps his barmy wife locked up in the attic at Thornfield, and Maxim de Winter murdered his first wife. Neither men are satisfactory husbands, to put it mildly, but inexplicably both manage to win the love of a good woman. Manderley also has the sinister housekeeper, Mrs Danvers, who is very gothic indeed.
If you don’t want to read the books, you might try watching some of the tv or film adaptations that have been made of them, they might give you an idea of what the books are about.
