Perceiving World as it is
The important thing that we are unable to realize and enjoy when being children is the ability to perceive the world with the minimum prejudice and experience hanging over us. Every little event seems huge, while some big universal thing may seem an everyday routine.
I recall the time when I was about eight years old. My cousin, Jake Wild, at those times was eleven. We did not get along very well. The reason for that was quite common: he, as many children of his age, lied about things. What bothered me the most was that he lied about every little event in his life? When he was saying that his football team won the game during one of the trainings due to his brilliant shots, one could be sure that he did not even have the ball during the game. When he was boasting about the fact that all the girls from his school dream to date him, one could be sure that he is the most unpopular guy in the class. During that day, I came over to my uncle’s house together with my family for Easter. Jake as usual was cheerful and boasting around, which made me rather annoyed.
My family lived about a hundred miles away from my uncle’s house, and due to that fact we did not see each other very often. The big holidays, like Christmas, Easter, New Year or Thanksgiving were the only days in the year when we saw each other. The rest of the relatives lived in the neighborhood or not far from it and communicated with each other way more than we did. Jake certainly had a chance to play with that crowd of kids more often than I did. On our way to the backyard, Jake told me that he was a leader of the gang and when we will join the company he is going to tell everyone to play basketball, and he is going to be the captain, because he is known to be the best basketball player in the neighborhood. Right away I knew he was lying. No one really liked him and certainly no one took him seriously, despite all his efforts to boss around.
Anyway, we took the basketball ball and went to the backyard. The crowd was playing hide-and seek. When we arrived the game was in its middle: Jane Boldman already found Mike and Ann Blackburn, and was looking for the rest of the kids. Jake went in the middle of the backyard and yelled: “Yo, everyone, the game is over, we are playing basketball now! Everyone get out from where You Are and get over here!” Jane, Mike, Ann and I gave him weird looks, Mike said that they were in the middle of the game having fun and were not planning to stop because Jake was eager to change the activity. I expressed my support to Mike and so did Ann. Jake, however, kept insisting that everyone need to stop the game they were playing and play basketball with him. When he was rejected in a rather rough voice, he got offended and said to me: “Whatever! They do not want to play with us, therefore we are gonna do our own thing and not let them in! Let’s go!” I was mad at him. I knew he was wrong, and I knew that I was not among those who were not wanted in the team. Therefore that was pretty much what I told him.
Looking back at the situation, I realize that it was mean. The only problem that my cousin had was his desperate desire to be a leader, which he could not realize. The fact that he was lying about his leadership, certainly did not add points to him, however, there was nothing to be mad at him for. Today I realize that probably I should have gone with him, or explained him that he looks stupid lying about the obvious things. But it is now. Back than, I yelled at him and stayed with the gang. I do not know what did he end up doing, but he did not play with us that day.

Pride & Prejudice [Music from the Motion Picture] $10.79 The year 2005 was big for Italian composer Dario Marianelli. His score for The Brothers Grimm received much applause (probably more than the film itself) and a few months later he came back with another batch of compositions for a period film. This time around, the plaudits are reversed: The film is better than the score. And that’s not the only reversal: Since several of his compositions were to … |

Sense and Sensibility [VHS] $1.75 Emma Thompson scores a double bull’s-eye with this marvelous adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel. Not only does Thompson turn in a strong (and gently humorous) performance as one of the Dashwood sisters–the one with “sense”–she also wrote the witty, wise screenplay. Austen’s tale of 19th-century manners and morals provides a large cast with a feast of possibilities, notably Kate Winslet, in her pr… |

Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (Six Piece Collector’s Boxed Set) [VHS] $8.90 Jane Austen’s classic novel of 1813, Pride and Prejudice, still wins the hearts of countless schoolgirls with its romantic story of Elizabeth Bennet and her Mr. Darcy. Now, the 1996 BBC miniseries is winning over adults, with its faithful adaptation, gorgeous scenery, and superb acting. The essence of the story is the antagonism between Mr. Darcy, a wealthy single man who believes Elizabeth to be … |

Jane Eyre [VHS] $7.94 Jane Eyre–the mother of all gothic romances–gets abundant passion in this 11-episode BBC miniseries. Young Sian Pattenden is wonderfully willful and impetuous; viewers will immediately identify with the child Jane as she fights against ill-treatment at the home of her aunt and at boarding school. It’s a shame to see her grow up into Zelah Clarke–until Clarke asserts her own quiet yet fierc… |

Pride & Prejudice $5.97 Literary adaptations just don’t get any better than director Joe Wright’s 2005 version of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice. The key word here is adaptation, because Wright and gifted screenwriter Deborah Moggach have taken liberties with Austen’s classic novel that purists may find objectionable, but in this exquisite film their artistic decisions are entirely justified and exceptionally well execu… |
