Who are your favorite old time boxers?
And when I say ‘old time’, I don’t mean Ali, Liston or Sugar Ray Robinson. I’m talking about guys like Kid McCoy, Gentleman Jim Corbett and Tom Sharky. Who were some of your favorites, forgotten or not? Any good stories you can share about them? I ask because it’s hard to find any information about some of the old ones nowadays.
Very good question. We talk a lot about contemporary fighters. That could either mean the “Post ALI” era or the previous. My own definition of “Old Time” boxers would be the “Pre-Dempsey” era.
Aside from Jack Johnson, none of the champions before Dempsey would do well in the Post-Louis era. Boxing has just changed so much. There are a few contenders who could make the transition.
It’s hard to pick just ONE favorite so I won’t even try. I have a few.
Sam Langford
Jim Jeffries
Jack Johnson
Stanley Ketchel
Harry Greb
Sam LANGFORD: Ol’ Sam had EVERYTHING against him. He got off to a Bad Start IN LIFE.
If you twist my arm enough and tell me to pick THE BEST fighter to never win or fight for a title, Most would pick Charley Burley. My pick would be Sam Langford. Burley would certainly be second. But we’re talking about “Old Timers”.
Sam Langford is first. He held the “Coloured heavyweight championship on and off from 1909 to 1918. Langford once said that the only really beating he ever took was from Jack Johnson. Johnson was a seasoned pro while Langford was just an up-coming fighter.
None of the champions, from Johnson to Dempsey, and even Tunney, wanted anything to do with Langford. At least a dozen times, I’ve read different accounts of Dempsey’s refusal to face Langford. And it wasn’t just the “Colour line”. Granted, Dempsey was young when Langford first challenged him. Still, Langford kept trying well into his later years.
Langford was 8 years older than Dempsey and only 5 years younger than Johnson. It’s understandable why Dempsey didn’t fight him in 1916, three years before he won the title. As Dempsey is quoted: “Why should I get my brains knocked out for nothing? Even at my best, I don’t know whether I could lick him”.
I could go on about “ol Sam but let’s go with others.
Jim JEFFRIES: BIG Jeff was a racist bastard but, as a boxing fan, I still admire him as one of my favorite old time fighters. See, I don’t dwell much on the race issue from years ago, especially from a boxing stand point. It was wrong but I wasn’t there and it was just a way of life.
The reason I like Jeffries is because I don’t believe any of the fighters before Dempsey would have a chance against the best of the Post-Louis Era. Johnson is a natural exception. However, if there is one other exception, it would be BIG Jeff.
Jeffries couldn’t box worth a damn. However, he was strong as an Ox and I could see him handling some of the later day contenders. Look at Oscar Bonavena. He couldn’t box either. It’s safe to say that Jeffries would have had an equal chance of beating Bonavena.
The same holds true for some of the other later day contenders and also some champions between Dempsey and Louis. He certainly would have knocked the Rawhide Horse $#!t out of Willard. Sharkey, Schmeling and Baer would all have their hands full and Carnera could forget it. BIG Jeff would knock him back into the circus.
Jack JOHNSON: Of course he’s one of my favorites but Most people would pick Johnson. He could certainly hold his own against SOME of the later fighters. Jack wanted to Train Joe Louis. Prime Louis would beat him but Young Louis would be a sitting duck.
Stanley Ketchel: Greb made many forget about Ketchel, with good reason. Still, Ketchel was a gutsy fighter and also very tough. He couldn’t box worth a damn but he could hold his own against many of the later day fighters.
The good thing about non-heavyweights is that you can go further back because, even though styles are different, a middleweight is still a middleweight. Many of today’s Colossal heavyweights would simply be too big for most of the old-timers.
Harry GREB: I’d pick Greb before Ketchel. Picking Greb is a bit like cheating or contradictiong myself because I said that Old Timers are in the era BEFORE Dempsey. However, since Greb was actually a year older than Dempsey, I can get away with it.
Greb had a short career and short life. But, somehow, he CRUNCHED 294 recorded fights in just 14 years, (3rd highest in history). I’ve read many accounts of how Greb used to bully Dempsey in sparring sessions. Little wonder Dempsey never gave him a shot at the title. Greb had an answer for nearly every style.
My other favorites are in the “Post-Dempsey” Era.
