Does anyone else agree the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” is a fad book?
We had a boss who made us read this. I think businesses need to quit wasting time making employees learn useless leadership skills and actually do work instead of mgmt fads. Usually, people who write books like that are trying to make a buck, if they are so good at that stuff why don’t they have a day to day job?? Bam! I said it!
These kinds of books are typically pretty lame. You might feel motivated for a week or so after reading them or taking the training, but then you forget about it. I think these books are written for two reasons:
1. To make money for the authors who typically wouldn’t be able to make it in a real job.
2. For “leaders” in a company to suggest that their employees to read, implying that if they do, they will become as great as the leaders.
Every executive in my company has a shelf full of this garbage. Most probably haven’t even read them. They remind me of high ranking officers in the military with a ridiculous rack of ribbons on their uniforms.
