Where do your ancestors come from?
I have been listening to the Garrison Keillor radio show and know that many people in Minnesota come from Swedish stock. Where did your ancestors come from? Did they have to flee? Have you ever been back to your roots?
My family were MacDonald’s from Glencoe. Thankfully not there at the time of the Massacre. They moved to lowland Scotland and changed their name. I have never been to Glencoe because I am told that it is an unearthly place where spirits live still.
My mother’s family Tuckers and Masons were English. The Tuckers settled the 2nd Jamestown. (see Capt. Wm. & brother Robert Tucker) The Mason’s (John Mason) were at Plymouth and arrived via the Mayflower. There are also two known Native women married into the family of Powhatan and Cherokee stock. A merchant named John Leatherwood who married a native girl (he named her Mary) is kin through my Moody ancestry. (Reuben Moody)
My father’s family, the Gall(a/o)way’s (spelling varies) are also from County Mayo, Ireland and Scotland. I say Ireland and Scotland because gggggggpa Robert Galloway from Knock, Ireland married a Scot from Edinburgh named Sara Tait. Their son was Tait Galloway m. Ann Gibson and their son was Matthew and came to the US in 1775 and fought in the Revolution. He’s buried in Oglethorpe, Ga. moved there from N.C. when Ga. had a land lottery.
The Oldhams (my fathers mothers side) were from England and settled in New England at Plymouth…actually Block Island when the Pequot Wars started. John Oldham was massacred with several other settlers to start the war.
In addition, I have ancestors from Kuopio, Finland who traveled to Texas via Nova Scotia and Scotland in the mid 19th century. Leonard M. Bjorklund was his name…married Sarah Freeman from Cumberland Maine on his way here.
Like most Americans…I’m a mutt.
I almost forgot Aunt Cindy who was stolen by the Comanchee Chief Nocona here in Texas. Her name was Parker but was a blood relative to the Galloways here in East Texas (Palestine area). She had children by him. The last great Comanchee Chief Quannah. I could actually call him Uncle.
A mutt with a lot of interesting family history. More recent marriages (in the last few generations) include family from all over…. wales, france, italy, sicily, africa, asia and who know where else, blood relatives? some yes…some no..
I have relatives all over the place including the Tuckers of Bermuda and Galloways in Australia. I’d love to meet them.
The Galloway’s of Edinburgh are well documented and are related as well. I have traced my ancestry to within a few generations of Wm. Galloway who fought at Bannockburn. I’m fairly certain he was family. I know this because Tait’s grandfather owned property in Edinburg and his lineage can be traced several more generations.
I have not been to the UK but plan on it.
Just as soon as I wrap up things here and set sail. It is on my list of places to visit. Hopefully this year.
