Why do so many Greco-Roman mythologies focus on killing family members?
Patricide, fratricide, matricide, you name it!
Why is that such a central part of Greek and Roman mythologies?
It served 2 purposes.
1. When dealing with the fraticidal tendencies of the Gods, it was to symbolize the destruction of the old order by the new. Zeus’s rape of his mother was a symbol of the new religion taking dominance of the old. Interestingly many think that since Cronus was an agricultural diety, the overthrow of him by Zeus was a social symbolism. They feel it symbolizes the indeginous culture being conquered and absorbed by a new Indo – Aryan militaristic invading one.
2. When myths deal with this done by mortals it is a warning against it. In Greek culture the family was an important base for the indidual to grow. Disruption of the family would create deviant individuals who would not be the best citizens of the polis. These myths are there to serve a warning against destroying the family. The fraticide of Romulus and Remus being an exception and was most likely a symbolism of two factions competing for supremecy over new Rome.
