The Rembrandt Affair by Daniel Silva
Sequel production in novels is generally a predictable affair, and the authors often end up going by ready templates while writing so the readers are always in familiar surroundings and they may feel as if they are hanging out with their old pals. There is consistent demand for sequels from the public which makes the publishers also create pressure on the authors. But then there are readers who like their favourite authors to be original and willing to take some risks so they may surprise them.
It is an Original Sequel
Daniel Silva fulfills both these requirements beautifully. He understands very well the readers don’t want to read form letters. The Rembrandt Affair is the tenth novel having the Israeli Assassin Gabriel Allon as protagonist which is both fresh and satisfies your desire for a sequel as well. The first half of The Rembrandt Affair is like any other detective novel where the protagonist Gabriel Allon is leading a retired life with a beautiful wife. An old acquaintance comes to him asking for help to solve an art heist. The CIA and MI6 agents as well as the familiar Mossad agents also appear to make it slightly predictable (and comfortable for the public).
And The Crime Trail Leads To …
During the course of his investigation, Gabriel Allon finds out about an elaborate network of European companies which are helping Iran build reactor centrifuges – which in turn will help Iran build nuclear weapons. Now it’s time to call in for help from his network of agents from different governments. The Rembrandt Affair is completed as if Daniel Silva is playing the same violin – with different but exciting new tunes and great results.
Sorry, Weapons Don’t Have a Role Here
Weapons do not play a large role in The Rembrandt Affair, though there is one weapon specifically named in the book – 9mm SIG P226 pistols used by Swiss security company agents. Before the readers jump to conclusions, don’t look for any radical changes over the previous template followed by Daniel Silva but the author pushes just the right buttons only like only he could. This is the only book in which Gabriel Allon doesn’t kill anyone. Allon’s first wife doesn’t come into the storyline of The Rembrandt Affair at all, which is also a major change from the previous editions of the series. The ending of the book is also symbolic as Gabriel Alon goes (and disappears) into the setting sun and the speculation over whether he is going to be the director of his own spy agency is also over.
