why do they call it alcoholics anonymous?
why do they call it alcoholics anonymous when the first thing you do is stand up and say hi my name is Bob and I’m an alcoholic!
it’s stupid!!
AA’s aren’t anonymous with each other, silly! Of course we know each other’s names, and why we are there.
We’re anonymous OUTSIDE of AA. So if I saw you at the store, I wouldn’t holler out “hey, that AA meeting last night was great! Aren’t you glad you don’t drink anymore?!”
Especially if you live in a small town, it’s important for some people to keep their anonymity at work, etc.
We’re also anonymous in the press. You’ll notice most long-term sober celebrities in interviews will reference “12-step program” and not AA by name.
